Arsenal are out of the League Cup. Fleetwood Town, a team from the fourth tier, beat them 5-3 on penalties in the fourth round. The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
This is a big shock. Arsenal are the first Premier League champions to be knocked out of this cup by a fourth-tier team while they hold the league title.
An unwanted record
This is only the second time Arsenal have lost to a fourth-tier team in this competition. The first time was in the 2012/13 season, when they lost to Bradford on penalties.
How did the game go?
Arsenal started the match better, but Fleetwood scored first in the 21st minute. Loupalo-Bi ran past young centre-back Marli Salmon and put the ball in the far corner.
Arsenal tried to reply, but Fleetwood defended very well. Arsenal finally scored in the 50th minute. Viktor Gyokeres got the ball in the net from close range after a cross from Ceedach O’Neill.
Missed chances
Arsenal had chances to win the game. Kai Havertz had a good chance when the ball fell to him, but Rhys Bennett blocked his shot. Soon after, Havertz had another chance, but he shot into the side netting.
Red card for Max Dowman
Five minutes before the end, Dowman was sent off for unsporting behaviour. It was the first red card Arsenal have had in this cup in five years.
Arsenal still made chances to win late in the game. But they were not sharp enough in front of goal, so the game went to penalties.
The penalty shootout
Arsenal scored their first three penalties. Then Bruno Guimarães had his shot saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch. Fleetwood scored all five of their penalties and won 5-3.
This win sends Fleetwood into the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
