Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Italy is in danger. Heavy rain in the Lombardy region has put their match against Como at risk of being moved to another day.

Heavy rain puts the pitch at risk

Italian officials have given an orange weather alert for Lombardy. This means the weather is severe and dangerous. The rain started on Tuesday and has not stopped.

Press Association reporter Simon Peach says the area could get up to 64mm of rain before kick-off at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

The pitch is already full of water. There is also a chance of lightning, which is a safety risk. Fans will have a hard evening too, because only one of the four stands has a roof.

Como officials still hope the pitch will drain well enough, so the match can go ahead.

United have many injuries

If the game is played, United face a hard test. Como are playing well and are coached by former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Former United defender Willy Kambwala also plays for Como.

United arrived in Italy with many players missing. Six first-team players did not train on Tuesday. This is their third Champions League game of the season. The missing players include:

  • Marcus Rashford
  • Kobbie Mainoo
  • Lisandro Martinez
  • Luke Shaw
  • Ayden Heaven
  • Patrick Dorgu

The injuries come at a bad time. United have won only two games in all competitions this season. This is their worst start to a season in 40 years.

What does Michael Carrick say?

Carrick is not worried about the rain. Before the trip, he said the team is used to wet weather and will make the most of it.

He was also asked about his job. He said he does not need anyone to tell him how things are going. He knows his role and his duties. He feels the club’s bosses support him and says he has a good relationship with everyone at the club.

Carrick also said that the team must win games, so that everything else can fall into place.
